Etron eSP868 3D Webcam Controller Wins 2012 Best Innovation Award from Hsinchu Science Park Administration

As technology for the human-machine interface (HMI) technology develops rapidly, 3D image capturing and motion recognition is gaining in importance. Etron Technology, Inc. (Taiwan GTSM: 5351) today announced that its eSP868 3D Webcam Controller has won the “2012 Best Innovation Award” from the Hsinchu Science Park Administration for its product innovation, technology and market development.

The popularity of 3D image capturing, motion recognition and display is growing fast, but the technology is complicated and hardware prices are high. It needs SoC technology to lower costs and penetrate deeper into the consumer market. Etron has achieved excellent sales results that put it at the forefront of the controller SoC market for PC cameras due to its products’ low price and high quality. The uniquely designed eSP868 is a 3D SoC that offers superior performance with low costs, heightening Etron’s competitiveness in the 3D webcam controller market.

The eSP868 supports HD and a frame rate of 30 frames per second. In addition, with the company’s proprietary 3D capture technology, the eSP868 supports a variety of 3D displays using Anaglyph, Shuttered, Polarized and Auto-stereoscopy (Lenticular and Parallax Barrier) technologies, providing a bright, flicker-free image that allows viewers to enjoy 3D pictures and video in comfort. The eSP868 has unique middleware and software to generate depth maps and provide skeletons to enable body/gesture controlled interactive games. The eSP868 also includes a special image signal processing engine, which is used to optimize image qualities under various ambient conditions and to alleviate the well-known correspondence and divergence problems stemming from traditional stereo-vision cameras.

Many 3D image capture products on the market are expensive and bulky, making it difficult to bring them into general use environments. Etron’s eSP868 controllers use Etron’s proprietary single-chip technology, which enables the size to be significantly reduced, as well as delivering a quality product at a reasonable price. Therefore, the eSP868 is ideal to bring competitive integrated system solutions for 3D interactive games, smart TVs, smart phones, ultrabooks, and surveillance systems to end consumers.
